Charles Darwin University (CDU) is a dual-sector university, offering a full spectrum of education and training opportunities in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training (VET). CDU is one of six members of Australia’s Innovative Research Universities network, which involves members directing knowledge, capabilities and resources to enhance the outcomes of higher education.
This project was all about creating a unique, user-driven space, where people would feel at ease and inspired to participate in their tasks. Different surfaces and textures were used throughout, creating a very tactile and engaging environment. UCI was engaged to work on the project because of our Muffle acoustic system, and the inspiration for what became a couple of 10 person meeting booths started with photos of our standard 6 person booths and grew from there, driven by the client’s needs. The soft, tactile appearance of Muffle, and the ability to add the roof section and create added privacy and the feeling of a compact space within a much larger space was an immediate hit. UCI are continuing to supply CDU with acoustic and privacy solutions in noisy areas with our Mitesco panel system.
Everything for this project was custom made, even the Muffle booth moved away from a standard model to a custom meeting booth that would accommodate a larger group of people (8-10). Working with Okamura, UCI created a new Muffle booth design from scratch which achieved the clients’ vision for this area, while still fitting the space.
